Well, that can't be helping the speed, and there are other issues: I've 
found some USB controllers/bridges/whatever behave very badly if/when 
there are errors on the disk. I've had them continue to say nothing is 
wrong but just give the same data over and over until the end of the 
disk.

IMO, you need to get at least your source/bad drive connected directly.
