I'd definitely vote for capturing the image as it is. Get all the ones and
zeros copied off as they are physically stored. This just seems safer... but
also more flexible.

Once you have the image file (still "slightly encrypted"), you then have two
main choices:

Modify the data image in a software routine to XOR it.

Or

Write the image back to another Sata drive and connect that replacement via
the same USB XOR bridge.
