Long time *nix user myself as well (25 years), and yes, it's a bit of a hiccup in the road, but if you have the lzip system installed in your distro you should find that tar unpacks it fine with 'tar lxvf ddrescue...tar.lz'. I know myself that I keep typing in tar zxvf or jxvf, so now we have lxvf. Best of luck.
