First, it is not easy at all to "slipstream" something into a Linux live
CD. Your best bet would be to use a USB drive to install the latest
version of ddrescue when booted to the live CD. You can install software
in the live environment (ram permitting), but obviously it will be gone
after a reboot. Sometimes there are things missing for
building/installing, and those must be installed also. I have not tested
installing anything from that live CD, so I don't know how complicated
it could get.
Second, have you yourself attempted to contact the author of the System
Rescue CD and suggest the update? As someone that does produce my own
remastered live CD, I can say that if someone contacts me with a request
for updated software with a good reason for the update, I will look into
updating it in the next version release if possible. I am not sure how
the author of the System Rescue CD handles requests (or how many
requests there are to deal with), but sometimes your voice can matter
even if you don't think it will.

Hello,
I use ddrescue exclusively from the System Rescue CD environment. The
latest System Rescue CD build of 2018-04-02 (see
http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/Download/) still uses ddrescue-1.21-r1
(see http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/Detailed-packages-list/), even
though 1.23 has been available since 2018-02-19.
Two questions:
1. Antonio, would it be effective if you contacted the System Rescue
CD people to get them to incorporate updating to the latest ddrescue
version as part of their release procedure?
2. What is the easiest way to "slipstream" in the latest ddrescue into
an .iso file of System Rescue CD, so that when I create a burn a CD
from that ISO file I basically get the same result? (I'm Windows 7
64-bit based, so other than when I boot into System Rescue CD to run
ddrescue, I don't really have make capabilities to compile, nor I am
really sure how to do so in a way that would work in the System Rescue
CD environment, so would need to be able to slipstream a pre-compiled
version compatible with the System Rescue CD environment.)
Thanks!
