Historically option -a for use with diff had for decades been explained as 
"treat all files as text" - where 'text' refered to the executable (binary) 
code of a program (cf.

Current updates of documentation and man-Page appear to refer inconsistently to 
the original meaning and to confuse it with unrelated notion of ASCII “text“.
