I'd vote for the old behaviour too.  However my vote hardly
counts, as I am still running a 20+ year old version ed 0.2,
with some personal hacks.

Those of us using ed aren't using it because we want
continuous non-essential refinements to its behaviour.

We're using it because it works, as it always has. 

Changes that enable it to work, the same way, in wider
contexts, or to work the same way, more efficiently
and reliably, may be valued.

Cosmetic changes in what displays, or doesn't display,
as it continues to work as it always has ... those I value
less ... or in my case, as I continue to use ed 0.2, not at all.
