Follow-up Comment #1:
I think xargs is behaving in the way the POSIX standard requries. If you
don't think that is the case, please be more specific about what it is doing
wrong (see http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/).
Otherwise, you could just wrap the affected program in a shell script which
changes the return value.
