My recollection is that POSIX doesn't specify the effect of using both -n and -i (-I, -L) at the same time.
I don't currently know of a commonly accepted practice for the combination either. However, if it turns out that there is a commonly accepted practice (for example if 3 or more otherwise unrelated Unix implementations do a consistent thing in this case), then we should probably follow it. Could you collate the evidence as to what the common behaviour is in this case? James.
