I haven't actually tried gdb on version 5.1. It "works" on 4.x, but support for the OS is, at best, incomplete. In particular, it has a lot of problems with stack traces. Too bad, too. I really like gdb, and use it on the other platforms I have to do debugging on. If you can handle a dbx-style interface, Compaq's ladebug works quite well. ddd will sit on top of it, but although ddd's support for ladebug has improved markedly, ddd still doesn't support it as well as it supports gdb. I've indicated to the Compaq Debugger team that giving ladebug a gdb-compatible interface would be a win, and they're in general a very receptive group, but that's not exactly an easy task to implement so I'm not sure if it will ever happen.
