I feel a little funny - or stupid - responding to my own question but I shortly found the answer that was plauging me.
In order to get Java-1.3 applications running under RedHat 7.x, I had to set the following environment variable: export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 Once I unset that variable, re-logged in, rebuilt the test program using shared libraries, I could debug the program.
