I cannot reproduce the trouble in my environment (OSX tiger).
Could you tell me the reproduction method by example?

Compile it (either by hand or by darwinports "port install global").
Type "gtags". This gives an immediate syntax error in langmap.
(Sadly I can't give a better bug report now since I just shipped my
MacBook back to Apple for repair :( Not an excuse, I swear!)
