I had compiled the latest version, but when I ran into the mex
trouble, I uninstalled it
and used apt to install another version. I have just installed the
latest version and its all working fine.
Thank you very much for all the help, I was starting to lose hope.

Which version of glpk are you using? You need glpk 4.15, not lesser.
