The sse build doesn't work on two athlon thunderbird machines I have. They 
are both 4-5 years old. I tried running with gdb and it failed in some 
3d-board file during startup. Possibly the -msse flag does some 
mumbo-jumbo to enhance 3d?? It might work if the -msse flag was only used 
on the files that really need it.

I can try with gdb again if you want to file a compiler bug.
