Hi Jim,

rename os13.bd gnubg_os.bd
rename 6x11.bd gnubg_ts.bd

os12.bd is a subset of os13.bd, so can be deleted.

The hyperx.db's are only useful if you play Hypergammon.

gnubg_os0.bd and gnubg_ts0.bd are loaded into memory when you run gnubg.
They are a subset of gnubg_os.bd and gnubg_ts.bd, containing data for a
limited number of chequers.
gnubg_os.bd and gnubg_ts.bd are kept on disk. Gnubg uses them if it
can't find the data in gnubg_os0.bd and gnubg_ts0.bd. Getting data from
disk is slower than from memory, but there is more space available.

More detail can be found here:
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnubg/manual/html_node/Bearoff-databases-wit
h-GNU-Backgammon.html#Bearoff%20databases%20with%20GNU%20Backgammon

I think appearance specifications are stored in .gnubgautorc. You could
keep this file when you update, and restore it.

Regards,
Ian Shaw

Subject: [Bug-gnubg] Request for Help regarding instructions on
renaming anddeleting superfluous BD databases

Hi! Before my questions I want to thank all of the programmers
for making such a wonderful program with all of your hard work. GNUBG
is the most wonderful gift for a backgammon enthusiast such as my self.
Major kudos to you all.

My questions are fairly simple but I don't want to make a
mistake by misuderstanding the Documentation.

        1. Listed below is the BD files as they now look in my gnubg
directory. Could you tell me what renaming changes are needed to make
the BD's functional and if any should be deleted.

        os13.bd 1,580,176KB
        os12.bd 697,954 KB
        gnubg_ts0.bd 6,671 KB
        gnubg_os0.bd 1,432 KB
        6x11.bd 1,196,605 KB
        hyper1.bd 19KB
        hyper2.bd 3,369KB
        hyper3.bd 293,458 KB

        2. I am also running the last build based on gtk+ - 1.3 as I
like to have 2 programs configured differently. A problem I am having
when I extract a new build forthis program is that it changes the
apperance of the program to a non-3d menu highlight and in general looks
like a program from the windows 98 era. How can I get the appearance I
had before back? Is it as simple as saving and inserting my old
gnubg.gtkrc and gnubg.gtkrc.ja or is it more complicated?

I know you are all busy in many endeavors so please accept my
thanks in advance to anyone will take the time to answer these simple
(but for me confusing) questions.

Thanks again for the finest backgammon program in the world.

        Sincerely,

        Jim Curtis
