I was receiving the same error as Maurice in thread:

I ran gnubg from the command line and noted the following errors:
gnubg.wd: No such file or directory
gnubg.weights: No such file or directory
locate found a gnubg.wd that was empty.
I copied a /usr/share/gnubg/gnubg.weights from a fedora box to the same
location on my Mandriva box and now gnubg works fine.
