The shadows have always been off, I figured that if the performance was
so poor, turning them on would have made things worse.

With "Quick drawing" on, the performance improves slightly (3.3 FPS,
with "Curve accuracy" set about halfway). But, IIUC "Quick drawing"
won't use the card's graphic acceleration.

Actually, I suspect that GnuBG never really uses the card's acceleration
- even with "Quick drawing" off - since the CPU pegs when it's animating
anything.
