As mentioned in my reply, (and the savannah bug report) the *default* settings for this page are made through the Settings menu/Player menu items. Default player settings can be changed there, and that is what will appear on the Modify Player settings page by default. The settings for a human aren't relevant, that is why they are greyed out. In fact it would probably be better to hide the items when human is selected so that there is no confusion. Along with hiding the options when human is selected, one may wish to make it easier to set the defaults from the new match/modify player settings page by offering "set as default" button.
