Hi, I have downloaded they hyper3.bd file but I do not know where
to place the file to be recognized on start up by the program? I
do not see this detail covered in the manual. No matter what I try
the option is still greyed out.

I am using linux btw.

If you using Debian or Ubuntu (apt-get install gnubg), the place
is "/var/lib/gnubg/".

If you using other distribution or installation, try following place:
- /usr/share/gnubg/
- /usr/local/share/gnubg/

Where these databases are installed on a specific system can be deduced from the Settings/Options/Match panel.

It shows what match equity table is loaded. If it is
<directory path>/met/<table.xml>, then the databases are in
<directory path>.

This is a little awkward (and undocumented). Maybe we could show this in Help/About gnubg/Evaluation Engine. Something like :

 * Contact neural network evaluator:
   - version 1.00, 250 inputs, 128 hidden units.
[...]
 * In memory 2-sided bearoff database evaluator
   - generated by GNU Backgammon
   - up to 6 chequers on 6 points (924 positions) per player
   - database includes both cubeful and cubeless equities
   - number of reads: 0

 * Weights file and databases installed in:
     /usr/local/share/gnubg
