I'd say go ahead, especially if the code is delicate or unmaintainable.
In all the years I have been on here I haven't been asked to deal with
this format. It is the type of thing people could use a previous version
of GNUBG to load and then save to a MAT file.

If you are in cleanup mode and looking for dead (unneeded code), you
could also eliminate the USE_EXTENDEDMATCHID processing in configure.ac
and the source files. The code I wrote didn't have any unintended side
effects after implementation, so I think it can be eliminated.
