Hi,
With regard to the new feature developed by Isaac and Aaron, is there a way or
a workaround in order to get it working on a Mac (Intel chip) ?
Or is here any plan to have the source compiled in a binary OSX format ?
I am interested only in the new feature as a standalone routine if possible (i.
e. copy the Gnubg ID of the position from the main GNU Backgammon already
installed and running on my laptop and paste it in the new routine)
Thank you for answer.
Pierre

We are happy to present three new features of gnubg on which we have
been working quite a lot. We hope you will enjoy them.

We both find ourselves often wondering how much of the GNUBG eval is due
to the score. Instead of repeatedly copy-pasting positions and editing
them at various scores, we thought we could automate the process. So we
coded new buttons for gnubg:
- Feature 1: the Money Eval button for cube decisions, which quickly
provides an eval for the current position at money play.
- Features 2 & 3: the Score Map button for cube & move decisions, which
show a color-coded map of all the cube decisions or best moves at
different scores.

We have tested the features for bugs a fair bit already, and will be
continuing to do so over the next few weeks.

Enjoy!

Did you change the random number generator to Blum, Blum ad Shub ? In
this case, it is probably this bug :
https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?57892

This is specific to BBS. The other RNGs should be fine. Deleting your
configuration file as suggested by Christian, or editing it to remove
the "set rng ..." line should fix the issue.

What don't you like in Mersenne twister ? If it is that it is not
cryptographically strong, ISAAC could be an alternative. From what I
read it has not been studied as much as BBS in this regard, but is
presumed to be strong.

FWIW, I can add the Xoshiro RNG to GNUbg. I wrote the code and tested it
a bit, but finally didn't add it since it seemed pointless to have a
larger collection of dice generators. Still, if someone make a credible
case for it, it would be easy to do.

Hi Isaac and Aaron,

Thank you! This is a really good feature that I've been wanting for a long
time. I hope there will be a Windows executable at some point.

The Score map is a step above what Snowie used to have; buttons for $, DMP, GS,
GG.

As for the layout, I think for the Move comparison, the natural shape of the
table means that the options will fit better when presented below the table, as
you have on page 2. Then it makes sense for the Doubling window to follow the
same layout. I have a small preference for 'Vertical 1' over 'Vertical 2'.

I would eliminate the options for 'True Score' and 'Away Score'. Anybody
serious enough to study in this detail is going to be thinking in 'Away' terms,
so just use that.

The Jacoby could be a simple on/off tick box to save room.

On the cube action table, it's not clear to me what the use of upper and lower
case letters mean (d/T D/T) etc. In any case, they seem to add not much more
than the colour code already gives you. How about replacing them with the
equity in millipoints? E.g. a D/T might be 985, a D/P a 1023. This would be
similar to the 'show equities' option in the Temperature Map feature.

The colour coding is a great idea. Perhaps Too Good should be another colour to
distinguish it from the normal No Double; Gold for Too Good/Pass and Purple for
Too Good/Pass.

It would be useful for the actual score of the match being analysed to be
highlighted in the grid, perhaps with a bold black border.

In the moves list, it would probably be useful to add a symbol such as § if the
correct score based-move differs from money play.

Will this feature be something that's included as an option in the 'Analyse
match' settings? Obviously, it would extend the analysis time by a lot to
analyse all moves at all scores, so an option to select just the comparison of
the current match score vs money might be good.

I hope you find some of these suggestions useful.

Cheers,
Ian Shaw
