Hi Alain,

I was able to install and run gnubg on a USB drive. I had to put the setup file
on the USB first and run it from there because it failed when I ran setup from
C: and tried to install on E:. It still wants to write setting to c: though,
and I’m unsure how to change this.

However, if your IT department has stopped you installing unauthorised software
on your C: drive, they are also likely to have blocked programs running from
USB sticks, which are notorious sources of virus infection. It’s possible that
the gnubg devs could sign gnubg with a certificate, and that might help.

Generous donations of cake to your friendly IT admin may me more successful!

Good luck,
Ian

Subject: Fwd: Corporate windows laptop

Dear Sirs

(I am not a list subscriber, please kindly answer to my email in addition to
the list)

First: thanks. I have been enjoying GNU Backgammon for a year or so, and I
found it superb. Thanks for your nice work.

now, on to my question/request:

I wish to be able to use the GBU Backgammon software on my corporate windows
laptop (Windows 11 Enterprise, v23H2). Until recently I had another older
laptop, where I had been able to install, but as of now, it does not seem to be
possible anymore. The issues I run into are two:

1) Windows prevents me from even running the install file (.exe).
The message I get is:
"Windows protected your PC. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an
unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.
App: gnubg-1_08_003-20240428-setup.exe, Publisher: Unknown publisher"

2) I don't have and can't have (anymore) the administrator password, which
would usually be needed to install software

Therefore, even though I don't know much about this stuff, I am wondering if
you have any plans of making a "portable" version of this magnificent piece of
technology? By any chance? (or if there is a way to run it from a joystick,
etc... whatever that could work for my setup)

Thanks and regards,

Alain Gougeon
