Hi Steven, I'm sorry you are having trouble getting started with GNU Backgammon. Do persevere - it's well worth the effort. I think I might be able to solve your problem.
Firstly, you mentioned that you have to press Ctrl+f to carry on. Ctrl+F is the shortcut to finish the move. [image: image.png] This makes me think that *you aren't completing your move by clicking on the dice to "pick up the dice ", which indicates that you have finished your move.* Here is a link to the online tutorial which has more details. https://www.gnu.org/software/gnubg/manual/gnubg.html#gnubg-playing If that doesn't work, check that you have set gnubg to play as the opponent. Press the New button and check that you have selected GNU Backgammon vs. Human. [image: image.png] You might also wish to experiment with the Settings, Options . [image: image.png] And, if you haven't discovered them yet, in Settings, Board Appearance there are some nice options for how the board looks. There is even a Jellyfish setting! I hope this helps. Let us know how you get on. Regards, Ian Shaw On Thu, 20 Nov 2025 at 22:06, Øystein Schønning-Johansen <[email protected]> wrote: > I am really sorry, but I really don't know what is wrong.
