Your earlier message summarized the problems that I remember. (Perhaps I've forgotten some.) I'm afraid that the only reliable way to test changes in this area is to have many Emacs developers and installers, who use different styles, build Emacs and report the problems that they see. This would be a reasonable thing to do, if the benefit is large enough relative to the cost (something that's not clear to me).
