You can use CVS in a read-only way, to retrieve the latest version
from the Git repository, using a command like this:

Since I reckon nobody in his sane mind is still using CVS to access
to the Gnulib repository,
Being the dinosaur I am, I would find it convenient on occasion if it
worked, but it hasn't for a long time, so ... life goes on.
IMHO, any access to GNulib through CVS should be simply disabled
That was done some time ago, when the whole git->cvs mirroring thing
stopped working. That's why you got the error message you did (as I
understand it).
