It seems that the 'git command-name --pretty=medium' existed before git version 1. I've found the commit that introduced the version I was using that caused breakage [1]. It seems that my git config also breaks a test case in vc-dwim. I've just changed my config for now, but assuming that command doesn't have any problems I can submit a fix there.
