I've not looked at this in detail, only to know there will need to be changes.
I'm not sure yet where they will be best applied.
I'll apply your test patch to coreutils anyway,
and may apply your patch to gnulib (but adjusted).
In any case I'll handle the details.
Note we're in the process of preparing the next coreutils release,
so it may push to the start of the next release dev depending
on time constraints.
