Are you using GNUpod 0.98 ?
Please upgrade to 0.98.2. The Volume stuff does work
with my Shuffle+0.98.2 and maybe it will fix the playcount
bug. Let me know if it worked..

Disable the 'auto-sync' stuff of iTunes.
That's a 'feature' of iTunes.. not a gnupod issue :-/
