Hi Robert,

1) What kind of iPod(Model/Generation) do you have?

2) Please run "dmesg" to see if the usb subsystem recognizes that a
device is getting attached at all or why the kernel only wants to
do a read-only mount of your iPod's filesystem.

3) Did you try to do a full reset of your iPod?
Here's the quick way to do it:
   1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn
      it off again.)
   2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons
simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds.
You may need to repeat this step.

4) Did you unmount/eject the iPod propperly from your linux system before
pulling the cable? ( You might have screwed up the filesystem if you
unplugged the device while it was still writing data from the write
cache to the device. ) If that is the case you may have to reformat the
   iPod: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61671

Hope that helped, cheers
-henrik
