Dithered images look fine. It's dithered text that is horrible.
Please do have a look at GNUstep/xdps run over an 8 bit PseudoColor
display.
What I'm suggesting is that all text backgrounds and foregrounds, and
preferably also major user-interface components (e.g. button frames)
should stick to the above palette.
