To follow up my own message: an alternative libtiff for Win32 can be obtained from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=23617 (just get the package named libtiff-3.5.6b-lib.zip ) and unzip it in your \mingw directory - it unzips into ./lib and ./include. This set of libtiff.a and header files does not cause the problem that the official "MinGW" libtiff does with gnustep-gui.
