To follow up my own message:

an alternative libtiff for Win32 can be obtained from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=23617
(just get the package named libtiff-3.5.6b-lib.zip ) and
unzip it in your \mingw directory - it unzips into ./lib and
./include. This set of libtiff.a and header files does not
cause the problem that the official "MinGW" libtiff does
with gnustep-gui.

Cheers,
Stephen Brandon
