Yen Ju, This was added for compatilibility w/ older X servers. I have tested it with both XFree86 4.0.2 which does not have XftDrawStringUtf8 and XFree86 4.2.0 which does have the method and the configure script defines it correctly in both cases for me.
Please send me you configuration log so we can determine what the problem is.
