You are right. I had somehow broken headers.
There is no method for encoding/decoding ranges because (afaik) the MacOS-X api doesn't specify one... perhaps they will add it some time in the future ...
Perhaps it is just missing in ther documentation?
I checked MacOS-X and there is no range method in their header files either.
