I forgot to put a warning about this, but you cannot use the Apple gcc compiler with GNUstep, you need to download the FSF one. The easiest way is to use fink ( or FinkCommander) to install the gcc-4 compiler, then you can do: 

export CC=/sw/bin/gcc-4
./InstallGNUstep
