Follow-up Comment #4, bug #21625 (project gnustep):
Yesterday I downloaded gnustep-startup-0.19.2 and removed my ~/GNUstep
directory in order to start a new configuration from scratch. The "big font
problem" has disappeared, but I am not sure that 0.19.2 incorporated Fred's
changes.
