Follow-up Comment #1:

I see two quite likely possibilities ...
1. the latest code in svn is prerelease for a new version, so if you build
and link with that you might well have some old code around linked with an
older version of the library ... which could well cause all kinds of trouble
... you should try rebuilding *everything*.
2. David Welzel and I have been trying to track down and fix an obscure
string handling bug before the next release.  I can't reproduce it on my
machines, so  have committed various attempted fixes for him to try out today.
 However, as this really only effects code attempting to find the length of a
long string when converted to utf-8k, it's unlikely to be your problem ...but
it might be worth updating to the latest code from svn anyway.
