Please don't use the bug system as a mailing list for discussions when there
isn't an actual identified bug.

how the API works and you are wondering about the right way to do something. 

Please move this discussion to one of the public and searchable mailing lists

These are all based on mailman.  They are public and can be searched, linked
to and referenced via the gnu.org site.

All of that being said, your concerns about the API being "wasteful of
resources" doesn't seem valid since, in both cases, the initial object which
is being replaced (the clipview and the text container) is released and
deallocated.   There shouldn't be any waste as far as memory is concerned.
