No, I'm running the latest stable version, 1.24.5, but I've also tried
versions 1.24.0 (with which the unar worked fine before) through 1.24.4.

And yes, unar is a command line tool, you can get its sources from here:
https://code.google.com/p/theunarchiver/downloads/list
("unar1.7_src.zip" is what you want).
