Ah... I was suckered in because you mentioned /etc/alternatives on your system and we were talking about Debian and away I went! But of course Fedora et al use the alternatives system to manage system programs such as /usr/sbin/sendmail and so of course /etc/alternatives will exist there. I think on Red Hat only a very few system level components are managed with the alternatives system such as the mta (aka sendmail), java, printing and xinput.
