Sorry, I copied the wrong line from the terminal:
It should be:
echo -e "a\nä" | LC_ALL=de_DE.utf8 ./grep -E '\w'
instead of
echo -e "a\nä" | LC_ALL=de_DE.utf8 ./grep -P '\w'
(i.e. \w in extended regular expressions)
