Follow-up Comment #1, bug #36831 (project grep):
I've been seeing a similar issue which is perhaps the same. If you run the
following command but substitute your terminal width in characters for XXX the
colored "1" is missing from the output in most terminals (except for
gnome-terminal).
printf "%0XXXd testn" 1|grep 1
