A regrettable copy and paste error in the source code.
I would ask "how much testing did this program actually receive?", but I'm
afraid I already know the answer.
$ printf ".pinyin start\nLUE1\n.pinyin stop\n" | gpinyin | nroff | cat -s
LŪ
The output _should_ be:
LǕ
