Thanks for looking into this, Branden and Bjarni!
The proposed patch in comment #1 does fix the problem in the trivial example
in the original submission, but fails in more complex documents. I'll try to
produce one that's complex enough to demonstrate but no more complex than
necessary.
I've not yet tried the alternate patch in comment #2.
