It occurred to me later that that might be the case, and I sat down to devise
a better test case, but found this new comment that beat me to the punch.

It would've helped to read the error message more carefully: it didn't say, as
I thought, "error: '\' is not allowed," but "error: '\ ' is not allowed," an
important distinction.
