Follow-up Comment #2, bug #62044 (project groff): The culprit is "\n(.$" (twice) in the macro ME in file an-ext.tmac.
. ie \n(.g .if \n(.$ \&\\$*\"
. el .if \n(.$>1 \\$2 \\$3 \\$4 \\$5 \\$6 \\$7 \\$8 \\$9\"
N.B.
If \& is used in front of \\$*, then why not in front of \\$2?
