Then why support two highly obscure URL schemes (formats 2-3) that were only
ever used by third-party software unaffiliated with Apple, none of which even
works with recent macOS releases?
I'm not interested in proliferating multiple URL formats either, but the
string I suggested would essentially function like an escape hatch for anybody
*needing* to override it (think: porters and weird exotic systems). The
default would be selected at build-time, and it doesn't need to be any more
complicated than that. Hell, it need not make an appearance in man.local.
