sit \*[1 A "\\*[2 "B\\\\*[3 C D]E" F]G" H] amet. is trying to pass a multi-line argument to the macro 1, which does not work in other troffs either. I have compared it against neatroff and its output is slightly different, but that probably has more to do with its behavior of \c than string interpolation.
