Follow-up Comment #2, bug #66443 (group groff):

I have looked at this again (forgot what it was about) and yes, the part

sit \*[1 A "\\*[2 "B\\\\*[3 C D]E" F]G" H] amet.

is trying to pass a multi-line argument to the macro 1, which does not work in
other troffs either. I have compared it against neatroff and its output is
slightly different, but that probably has more to do with its behavior of \c
than string interpolation.
TL;DR: You can close this; sorry for the wasted time.
