In the original submission of bug #63366 I observed that not all special fonts
are equivalently special.  Neither Branden nor I knows whether this is
intentional.

Right, the two situations this ticket contemplates are at opposite ends of the
character search list.  They're thematically related enough to warrant
cohabiting in the same ticket, but as you point out one of them could be
solved with some structural changes rather than a new .*char request.
