Follow-up Comment #22:
The performance problem is a whole huge thing on its own, as can be seen in
recent comments to this ticket; it's eaten up three quarters of the comment
traffic.
The performance issue also does not implicate the semantics of the `asciify`
request per se.
I've spawned a new ticket, bug #67602, for the performance problem.
Per comment #5, everything else material to **this** ticket is accomplished.
Resolving as fixed.
