Follow-up Comment #1, bug #67744 (group groff):

I furthermore note that even back in _groff_ 1.22.3, our documentation implied
(albeit vaguely) that argumentful escape sequences were not allowed as escape
sequence delimiters.

groff.info:

   The following escapes sequences (which are handled similarly to
characters since they don't take a parameter) are also allowed as
delimiters: '\%', '\ ', '\|', '\^', '\{', '\}', '\'', '\`', '\-', '\_',
'\!', '\?', '\)', '\/', '\,', '\&', '\:', '\~', '\0', '\a', '\c', '\d',
'\e', '\E', '\p', '\r', '\t', and '\u'.  Again, don't use these if
possible.


I later revised the manual to make the prohibition explicit.
