Follow-up Comment #11, bug #67830 (group groff): I need to get my thoughts together properly, but reading over [https://cgit.git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/groff.git/tree/tmac/trans.tmac?h=1.23.0 "tmac/trans.tmac"] will get you on the same page as I am, I expect.
Consider how the goal of this file is to enable localization.
Consider how, in most cases, the design of the macro package providing the
strings isn't important. E.g., do we really need multiple package-specific
strings for the word "appendix"?
What *is* important is to have a dictionary for natural language words and
phrases. Said dictionary can be shared among multiple full-service macro
packages where convenient.
I think:
1. The _ms_ and _me_ packages name strings mostly congruently with the goal I
stated above. (Exceptions: "-toc" may not be the most helpful partial string
name, and in _me_, the names I chose for "-appendix-string" and
"-chapter-string" are not so good. They should just lose the "-string"
parts.)
2. The _mm_ package mostly doesn't. For the month names, it does.
3. I don't know what _mom_ is up to. It's Peter's bailiwick, so if it works
and he and his users are happy with it, I intend not to touch its approach.
I'd prefer to defer this work until after the _groff_ 1.24.0 release.
